KK warden charged with bribe-taking to smuggle in items for prisoner

KOTA KINABALU: A prison warden here was charged with 15 counts of accepting bribes totalling RM2,150 to smuggle in prohibited items for an inmate.

Dulaham Ajak, 45, pleaded not guilty to the charge framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 before sessions judge Abu Bakar Manat.

The court also fixed RM15,000 bail (RM8,000 to be deposited), with one local surety. The accused was also ordered to surrender his passport.

Dulaham is accused of receiving between RM100 and RM250 for each of 15 banking transactions between Aug 25 and Dec 20 last year.

He had been receiving the bribes from the same person to smuggle prohibited articles to an inmate at the lockup where he works.

The act is an offence under Section 58 of the Prison Act 1995.

Earlier, Dulaham asked for a reduced bail amount of RM5,000, as he is still employed at the lockup and is not going to abscond.

“I have worked at the lockup for 24 years. This is my first offence during my service.

“I also have a child aged 5,” said the man, who was unrepresented.

Deputy public prosecutor Rozanna Abd Hadi appeared for the MACC.

The case will be mentioned on Oct 11.
