AG receives investigation paper in child marriage case

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has received an investigation paper (IP) relating to the 41-year-old man who married a 11-year-old girl in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Attorney-General Tommy Thomas said he had received a report on the case but he needed time to go through it.

“I can confirm that an IP just arrived in my office and we are looking through it.

“This is a complex matter as it involves Syariah law in the respective state,” he said, during a special session at the 2018 International Malaysia Law Conference here today.

It was reported on July 9 that the rubber trader who married an 11-year-old girl was fined RM1,800 by Gua Musang Lower Syariah Court for marrying without approval and also getting into a polygamous marriage without consent.

He was charged under Section 19 and Section 24 of the Kelantan Islamic Family Enactment 2002 which carries a maximum RM1,000 fine or two months’ jail.

The marriage on June 18 went viral after the man’s second wife posted it on Facebook, which sparked outrage among Malaysians who had also called for the minimum legal age for marriage to be increased from 16 to 18.
