Woman in attempted snatch theft incident remains unconscious

BALIK PULAU: A 60-year-old woman remains unconscious in the intensive care unit of the Penang Hospital after falling victim to an attempted snatch theft incident in Lorong Lebuh Mahsuri, Bayan Baru here, on Saturday.

Doctors who are attending to her believe the woman may have suffered internal hemorrhage since no external injuries were found on her body.

So far no one has been arrested although witnesses claimed there were two men on a motorcycle who had tried to snatch the woman’s handbag.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent A.A. Anbalagan said the incident happened at 6.15am when the victim was walking alone towards her friend’s house.

He said before she reached her destination, two men on a motorcycle approached her and tried to pull her handbag.

“The suspects however failed in their attempt but the victim fell face-down on the ground.

“Two of the victim’s friends who witnessed the incident, could not tell the model and registration of the motorcycle as it was dark at the time of the incident,” he said.

Anbalagan, accompanied by several police officers, visited the victim at the hospital this afternoon, where they spent some time with her son.

Anbalagan said the victim had yet to regain consciousness although she had undergone surgery on her head.

The case was being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code.

“We urge those with information on the incident to come forward to assist in our investigation,” he added.
