Rape suspect nabbed following dramatic George Town car chase

GEORGE TOWN: A man suspected of raping an underage girl was detained following a car chase with police here, last night.

The 29-year-old was driving along Jalan Lebuhraya Jelutong when his car was stopped for inspection at 9.30pm.

But as a team of policemen approached the vehicle, the man sped off and a high-speed chase ensued.

“During the chase, the suspect rammed into a motorcycle and a car. We had no choice but to fire a shot to stop him in his tracks.

“After ramming into the car, the suspect’s car came to a halt. However, he did not give up and fled on foot.

“We gave chase until Jalan Sungai Pinang and managed to arrest him there,” said Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang.

He revealed that the man has a criminal record of nine cases – two of which are drug-related.

“Our checks also showed that the suspect had just been released on parole on Nov 26,” Che Zaiman said, adding that the man will be brought to court for a remand hearing this morning.
