Authorities cut off power supply to 11 gambling dens in Bintulu

BINTULU: Police and Sarawak Energy Bhd carried out a joint operation to cut electricity supply to 11 illegal gambling premises here yesterday.

Bintulu district police chief Superintendent Zulkipli Suhaili said the operation was conducted out between 9am and 2pm.

“The action was taken in accordance to Section 21A of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which allows the police to request for the power supply to premises suspected to have carried out gambling activities to be disconnected,” he said in a statement today.

He said such action was effective in serving as a lesson to premise owners and deter them from conducting businesses that were against the law.

“Some (of the gambling dens) were masquerading as sundry shops.

“Disconnecting the power supply is an effective way to curb illegal gambling,” he said.
