Couple arrested after syabu found in car in Beaufort

BEAUFORT: Two people have been arrested after police found drugs in their car during a routine inspection at Beaufort Square here yesterday.

The couple, aged 54 and 47 respectively, were detained by the Beaufort police district's Narcotics Crime Investigation Department at 11.50am.

Beaufort district police chief deputy superintendent Azmir Abd Razak said the couple introduced themselves as police officers after their Perodua Kancil was pulled over.

"Officers then searched the car and found one plastic bag, containing what we believe to be methamphetamine, wrapped inside a towel.

"The couple and the drugs, weighing 12.84 grams and worth RM1,200, were brought to the Beaufort district police headquarters for further action," he said when contacted today.

Azmir said the man tested positive for methamphetamine (syabu) while his wife tested negative for drugs.

Investigations are ongoing to determine where they obtained the drugs.

"The male suspect received his drugs from a man in Beaufort town. They have been remanded and will be investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act," he said.
