Police arrest fugitive couple with drugs on highway

JOHOR BARU: A man on the police's wanted list was arrested along with his 29-year-old wife as they attempted to flee a roadblock in Jalan Muar-Yong Peng near Sri Medan here yesterday.

The couple abandoned their car and took off on foot when policemen at the roadblock told them to alight the vehicle upon finding drugs in the man's sling bag.

Batu Pahat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ismail Dollah said upon checking the male suspect's bag, policemen found ganja and methamphetamine.

"Checks based on the identification cards, showed that the 27-year-old man is wanted by police in in connection with a drug case under Section 15 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"When his records came up, the pair tried to take off," he said.

He said Highway Patrol Unit (HMPV) together with personnel from Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division and Sri Medan Police Station secured the couples arrest.

"Both suspects were taken to the Batu Pahat District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action," he said.

Ismail added that urine tests on both suspects also came back positive for methamphetamine.

"The case is being investigated under Section 6, Section 15 (1) (a), and Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and both suspects have been remanded to assist in the investigation," he said.
