Woman arrested after blowing petrol station's earnings on CNY gambling

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A petrol station manager, who gambled away part of her company’s earnings during the recent Chinese New Year celebration, was arrested by police at her workplace this afternoon for lodging a false report.

The 58-year-old lodged a report yesterday, alleging that she was robbed by an unknown man at the parking lot of the petrol station in Sungai Rambai here.

Among others, she claimed to have lost RM30,000 of the company’s money, which was kept inside an envelope.

Seberang Prai Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said police, in the course of the investigation, found discrepancies in her claims.

“We examined the closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage of the scene and found no such incident (robbery) happened.

“We subsequently detained the suspect this afternoon. Upon questioning, we established that she had lodged a false report.

“She claimed she was robbed when she actually spent about RM16,100 of the company’s money on gambling and preparations for Chinese New Year,” he said.

Nik Ros Azhan said the suspect had kept another RM18,900 in the petrol station, which police seized for investigation.

“To make her story believable, she also threw her personal belongings, including her cell phone and personal documents, into a dustbin along Jalan Padang Lalang to make it look like it had been snatched from her,” he added.

The case is investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code.

The woman will be remanded at the Bukit Mertajam court tomorrow and will be spending the night at the district police headquarters’ lock up.
