Johor civil servant fined RM50,000 for accepting bribe

JOHOR BARU: A civil servant was fined after he pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of receiving a bribe about two years ago.

Ismail Busrah, a former assistant director of the Johor Department of Occupational Health and Safety, was fined RM50,000 in lieu of a 14-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to the charge in front of judge Kamarudin Kamsun.

He was accused of receiving RM30,000 from Norazman Abdul Latif, who was a supervisor of a project at the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid).

Ismail was accused of committing the offence at Jalan Lingkaran Dalam Johor Baru between 2.15pm and 2.30pm on Oct 31, 2017.

He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

In mitigation, Ismail, 39, asked for a light sentence as this is his first offence and that he regrets his action.

He also said that he had been an exemplary civil servant who had received two excellent service awards; and that he has to support his family.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Mohammed Heikal Ismail appeared for the prosecution, while Ismail was unrepresented.
