MACC expects to wrap up probe on Sessions judge alleged graft case

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is expected to soon wrap up its probe into the arrest of a Kuala Kubu Baru Sessions Court judge and other high-level officials for alleged corruption in connection with the detention of illegal immigrants.

MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya said the 45-year-old judge had been remanded for two days to assist in investigation into the case.

Besides him, also arrested was a deputy public prosecutor, a lawyer and six policemen in connection with the charging and release of 15 illegal immigrants.

"The whole eco-system of the court was picked up in this particular case, and we expect to wrap up probe pretty soon," she said after a working visit to the state MACC headquarters here today.

This is her first official visit here after assuming the post two months ago. Present was MACC deputy chief commissioner (operation) Datuk Seri Azam Baki.

Asked if it was an isolated case, Latheefa said MACC was quite sure that it was not limited to this case only.

"Of course we will not reveal when we are going to nab the next group.

"The point is this is a very serious case as it involves high-level officers and not just mere cops receiving bribe. It is something that raises serious concerns on how this happened and continues to happen.

"That is the message we are sending out, but that can't be just a one-off situation. We will look into other cases as well," she said.

As to how long the syndicate had operated, Latheefa said that was still pending investigation.

It was reported yesterday that the MACC arrested the judge for alleged corruption. The judge was linked to the lawyer, deputy public prosecutor and several policemen who had been arrested recently.

The investigation has to do with the detention of illegal immigrants for the purpose of receiving payments for their release.

A sum of money was seized (from the judge) when the arrest was made.
