Maid disappears with employer's jewellery, cash worth RM125,000

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police are on the hunt for an Indonesian maid who absconded with her employer’s jewellery and cash worth RM125,000.

The 31-year-old suspect had only started work at her employer’s house in Bandar Perda three months ago and was still under probation.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the employer discovered the valuables missing after returning home from the market and found the maid missing today.

He said the employer, a 33-year-old operations manager, then searched the house and found that his mother’s wardrobe had been pried open.

“A bag, containing the valuables inside the wardrobe, was nowhere to be seen. He then decided to lodge the police report,” Nik Ros Azhan said.

Among the items missing were a tri-colour gold necklace, seven gold bracelets, five gold rings, a pair of gold earrings and RM2,600 cash.

The items had been in the possession of the employer’s mother for the past 10 years.

At the time of the incident, the employer’s stroke-stricken father, a niece and the suspect were at home.

Nik Ros Azhan said a neighbour saw the maid leaving the house via the front door at about 8.50am.

“However, the neighbour did not suspect anything as the maid had brought nothing with her. We believe that she could have thrown the bag at the back of the house as we found the door unlocked,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 381 of the Penal Code.
