Principal under probe for sending suggestive text messages to students

KOTA KINABALU: The state Education Department is continuing its probe on a school principal for allegedly sending offensive text messages to his students.

Sabah Education and Innovation minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said the disciplinary action committee was in the midst of investigation.

He was referring to a case at a school in Telipok near here, which saw parents lodging report against the principal for texting sexually suggestive content to pupils.

"We know about this case and it is in the midst of investigation by the disciplinary action committee. They will interview the teacher (principal) and those involved.

"This is a serious case as it is one of public interest. It should be handled properly," he said when met at the State Assembly building here.

The principal, however, is still on duty despite ongoing investigations.

Dr Yusof said there was no conclusion or action that could be taken without proper evidence or proof.

He also said that such incidents were not isolated as there had been many similar cases in the country before.

"It is a clear message to teachers that stern actions will be taken if investigations produce evidence.

"Action will be taken including sacking teachers from their services. This is a reminder for teachers and school superiors that they are responsible (for the wellbeing) of students, otherwise they will be affecting the teaching institution (reputation)."
