Cops nab woman who dumped newborn in monsoon drain

KUCHING: A 20-year-old woman dumped her newborn girl in a monsoon drain near her home in Bandar Semariang here hours after giving birth.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Awang Din Awang Gani said the suspect had given birth on Saturday night before seeking treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital.

“A medical officer from the hospital filed a police report the next day (Sunday) at 11am after it was believed that the suspect, who had been suffering from heavy bleeding, showed signs of labour,” he said in a statement here.

“The suspect was reluctant to disclose the detail. But she later led the police to the scene where she abandoned her baby girl,” he added.

The body of the infant was found at 6pm yesterday (Sunday) and taken to the Sarawak General Hospital for post mortem.

The woman, Awang said, is still warded at the hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body.
