Suspects in Sg Selangor pollution remanded 7 days [NSTTV]

SELAYANG: A company director, his father and six of the company's workers, believed to be responsible for the latest water cuts across the Klang Valley, were remanded for seven days by the magistrate's court today.

Magistrate Nik Mohd Fadli Nik Azlan issued the remand order against the eight men to assist police investigations into the raw water source contamination in Sungai Selangor.

The suspects comprised a 31-year old director of a construction machinery sales and repair company, his 62-year old dad, two local and four foreign workers, from Pakistan, Nepal and Myanmar aged between 66 and 28.

The eight arrived at the court at 9am handcuffed and clad in lockup uniforms.

They were then brought before the magistrate half an hour after their arrival.

After less than half an hour hearing the application, the magistrate granted the police the remand order against the eight for investigations under Section 430 of the Penal Code.

The Section for an offence of mischief by causing a diminution in the supply of water provides for a jail term of between five and 30 years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The remand order against the suspects is expected to expire on Oct 28.

The eight were arrested at 11.30am yesterday in Rawang, Selangor after initial investigations found that the odour detected in Sungai Gong, Rawang, was suspected to have started from the company.

It was reported that an abnormal odour was detected at the raw water source in Sungai Selangor at 12.38am on Monday, causing operations at the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant (LRA) to be stopped.

At 2am the same day, Sungai Selangor LRA Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 had to be shut down when an odour pollution of three TON (Threshold Odour Number) was detected.

The stop work order at four plants had caused unscheduled water supply disruption involving 1,196,457 account holders covering 1,292 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.
