Ranau man nabbed for possession of two homemade guns

RANAU: Police seized two homemade guns, known locally as 'bakakuk', during an Op Laras operation at Kampung Narambai, here.

In the 5.20pm raid, a police team went to an unnumbered house and detained a man in his 30s.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Sammy Newton said the team had received a public tip-off that the man was keeping two bakakuk at his home without a firearm permit.

"During the raid, the man had been cooperative and showed the police team where he stored the firearms.

"The man has no criminal record but owning a firearm, even if it's homemade, without a licence is an offence," he said.

According to Sammy, the case is being investigated under Section 8 (a) of the Arms Act 1960 (206 Act) for possessing or carrying arms and ammunition without an arms licence or arms permit.

"If convicted, the offender is liable to imprisonment of not more than seven years or a fine of not more than RM10,000, or both," he said.

Sammy encouraged members of the public to continue funnelling information to the police with regards to those keeping firearms without licence to prevent untoward incidents.
