Penang couple held for allegedly abusing, torturing maid

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police arrested a married couple from Jalan Perpaduan in Kampung Baru, here, for allegedly abusing their Cambodian domestic helper.

The duo, in their 50s and 60s, was held following a tip-off from the public at about 9.30pm yesterday.

A team of police, which rushed to the house, managed to rescue the victim, who is in her 30s.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafee Abd Samad said a physical examination of the victim found injuries on her face, scalding marks on her arms, and scars of stitched wounds and scratch marks on her body and legs.

"The victim complained that she had been beaten, scalded with hot water and punched, among others, by her female employer.

"We have taken the couple into custody for further investigation," he said today.

The victim was taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.

Shafee said the victim had been working with the couple for two years. She was hired by the couple's children.

It is learnt that the maid was paid her salary, but other welfare needs, including food and drink, were neglected.

Shafee also said that the case is being probed under Sections 13 and 44 of the Anti-Trafficking In Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007.

The act carries a maximum 20 years' jail and a fine upon conviction.
