Seremban man nabbed for broadcasting film without copyright permission

PUTRAJAYA: The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) nabbed a man on suspicion of showing a film without the permission of the copyright owner through the Telegram messaging application.

KPDNHEP enforcement director, Azman Adam, said the man was nabbed during a joint raid with the copyright owner of the film at a house in Seremban, Negri Sembilan.

The raid comes on the heels of about two weeks of intelligence and information-gathering by the film's copyright owner, he said.

He said the 45-year-old man was suspected of committing an offence under Section 41 of the Copyright Act 1987.

"KPDNHEP also seized several items belonging to the suspect, including communication equipment, with the seizures estimated to be worth RM5,000," he said in a statement today.

Azman said if convicted, the suspect could be fined not less than RM10,000 and not more than RM50,000, or jailed for not more than five years.
