Teen who was 'bathed like a corpse' spared jail term

SHAH ALAM: The High Court today set aside a 10-day jail sentence and RM4,000 fine on a teenager who was "bathed like a corpse" for attempting to steal from a mosque donation box in Kuang, Rawang last week.

High Court judge Datuk Abd Halim Aman commuted the sentence against Daniel Iskandar, 19, and ordered for him to instead serve 120 hours of community service for a period of six months.

The court made the decision after hearing submissions from the prosecution and defence.

The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Norhana Sahat while Daniel was represented by lawyers Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, Fahmi Abdul Moin, Azman Abdullah and Ilyani Khszairy.

Also present were lawyers Haniff Khatri Abdulla, Muhammad Hariz Yusoff, Nur Fatin Syakinah Kamarudin, Ahmad Khalil Md Rofiee and Muhammad Mustaqim Ahmad Huzaini from the Malaysia Muslim Lawyers' Association.

Megat Abdul Munir Megat Abdullah Rafaie acted as the legal observer for the mosque, Masjid Al Islahiah.

On Jan 13, the Selayang Magistrate's Court had sentenced Daniel to 10 days jail and a fine of RM4,000 for trying to steal mosque funds on Jan 8.

The teenager had pleaded guilty to the charge.

The case came under the spotlight after a viral video emerged, showing the teen being 'bathed like a corpse' by several mosque committee members after he was caught.
