'Pak teh' the latest drug sought by Kelantan addicts, say police

KOTA BARU: Heroin, also locally known as "pak teh" among the Kelantanese, is the drug currently high in demand by addicts here.

Acting Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said this was based on a series of seizures made by the state police in its recent anti-drug operations.

"Previously, local drug addicts tend to consume methamphetamine pills but nowadays, they have switched to heroin," he said.

Zaki said the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department had been carrying out round-the-clock operations against drug pushers as well as addicts.

"In our latest Op Tapis, carried out between Aug 11 to 13, we seized more than RM800,000 worth of drugs.

"The drugs seized were mostly heroin and psychotropic pills, and meant to be marketed to some 70,000 addicts," he added.

During the operation, Zaki said 301 people, mostly drug addicts, were arrested.

"In the operation, police also seized several vehicles and about RM76,000 in cash," he added.
