Pregnant woman held over attempted robbery in Melaka

MELAKA: A six months pregnant woman was arrested by police on suspicion of being involved in an attempted robbery at a jewellery shop in Ayer Keroh, near here, on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old suspect, who works as a human resources executive at a private company, was arrested in Kampung Kuala Linggi about 5pm yesterday.

Melaka Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the suspect claimed that she attempted the robbery because she wanted to try something extreme.

"Checks revealed that she is married, has a child and is six months pregnant.

"We seized from the suspect a knife measuring approximately 13cm that is believed to have been used during the incident," he said today.

He said the suspect had been remanded for four days until Dec 27 for further investigation.

"The investigation is ongoing. The case is being investigated under Section 393/397 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery with a weapon."

A video clip of the incident has gone viral. It shows a woman wearing a black robe and a face mask pointing a knife at a gold shop employee. She then asked the employee to put jewellery into her backpack.
