Police completing investigation on MP in Quranic verse case

KUALA LUMPUR: The police are completing their investigation against Ipoh Timur member of parliament Howard Lee Chuan How who allegedly made his own interpretation of a Quranic verse in a viral video.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said they had recorded Lee's statement at about 3.30pm at the Perak police headquarters on Tuesday (Sept 26).

Two police reports related to the issue had been lodged so far.

"The case is being investigated under section 505C of the Penal Code for intent to incite any class or community, and under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"We are in the process of completing our investigation before we submit the paper to the Attorney-General's Chambers," he said in a press conference today.

On Sept 22, Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the investigation would be carried out by the Classified Crimes Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department at Bukit Aman following the initial report or first complaint made against the MP at the Jalan Tun Razak police station in Kuala Lumpur.

One of the police reports was from a non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Jalinan Bersatu Sahabat (Jabat) Perak, which requested an investigation and action to be taken against Lee for allegedly insulting Islam.

Perak Jabat president Amiruddin Mohd Daud had said that Lee was a non-Muslim who interpreted verses from the Quran and this meant that he had touched on 3R matters (religion, royalty, race).

Lee has since apologised for what he did.
