Man injured in attack over debts, suspect nabbed

GEORGE TOWN: A man was injured after he was stabbed at a market here this afternoon, believed to be over debts.

Police was alerted to the incident about 3pm.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said police who arrived at the scene found the 26-year-old victim slumped to his car seat covered in blood after he was stabbed with a sharp object.

"The victim was stabbed in his leg and stomach.

"He was taken to the Penang Hospital for treatment and reported to be in a stable condition.

"Initial investigations revealed the attack was caused by a debt problem," he said.

Soffian said at about 6.40pm, a team of police detained a man in Macallum here, believed to be involved in the case.

"The 51-year-old suspect has a previous record for drugs.

"His urine test came back negative for drugs," he added, noting that police would apply for a remand order against the suspect.

The case is probed under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntary causing hurt using a weapon.

Soffian urged those with information to contact any of the nearest police station or investigating officer Assistant Superintendent K. Linkeswaran to assist in investigation.

"We urge the public not to make any speculation or spread photos and videos of the incident," he said.
