Johor police probe series of bomb threats at five private schools

JOHOR BARU: Johor police received five reports of bomb-threats from private schools operating in the state, today.

The threats targeted five private schools located in Masai, Gelang Patah, Kulai, Muar, and Permas Jaya.

Johor police chief Commissioner Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said school administrators received the threats via emails titled "explosive material planted in school", between 11am and 6.18pm.

Earlier, the New Straits Times reported that seven schools in Klang Valley received bomb threat made via emails.

Kamarul Zaman said following the threats, officers from the Bomb Disposal, Special Branch, K9 units and school liaison officers were dispatched to schools respectively.

"A thorough inspection was carried out within the schools' premises, yet, no suspicious objects were found, and the areas were deemed secure.

"However, as a precautionary measure, police presence was maintained at the schools," he said, adding the schools will be monitored continuously for the time-being.

The case is investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for stalking, which, upon conviction, carries a imprisonment term up to two years, a fine, or both.

Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, for using network facilities to transmit communication deemed to be offensive, which, if proven guilty entails a maximum fine of RM50,000, a-year imprisonment-term or both.

Kamarul Zaman advised members of the public to remain calm, and refrain from making any speculations that could cause distress or disrupt public peace.
