College student killed, passenger burnt to death in Pekan crash

PEKAN: A college student was killed after he was flung out his vehicle while his passenger was burnt to death after the car they were travelling in collided with a trailer at KM18 of Jalan Pekan-Nenasi near here yesterday.

In the 8.45pm crash, Perodua Kancil driver Muhammad Shafiq Haikal Mohd Najib, 18, was killed on the spot while his passenger, whose completely charred remains were found inside the vehicle, has yet to be identified.

Pekan district police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said checks revealed the Kancil was travelling from Rompin towards Pekan while the trailer was travelling from Pekan to Johor Baru, Johor.

"Shafiq Haikal is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before it veered and crashed into the oncoming trailer. The impact of the collision resulted in the car splitting into two and it caught fire.

"Shafiq Haikal was thrown out of the vehicle and died at the scene. His passenger was completely burnt and no identification documents were recovered," he said, adding both the remains were taken to Pekan Hospital for post-mortem.

Zaidi said the 42-year-old trailer driver escaped unhurt and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987

Meanwhile, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said 16 firemen from the Pekan and Nenasi fire station were deployed to assist at the scene.
