Husband burns mattress in fit of anger over wife attending wedding without him

AMPANG: A 61-year old man torched his mattress and pillow at his home in Taman Pandan Mewah on Friday simply because his wife attended a wedding without him.

The wife who works as a cleaner allegedly went for a wedding in Kajang and when she returned home at about 9pm, she caught the smell of smoke coming from her house.

Upon inspecting the house, she found the husband burnt their mattress and pillow out of anger.

The suspect admitted to using a lighter to start the fire and he too put the fire out himself, before she returned home.

Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the suspect was arrested following a report by the 57-year-old wife on the same night.

"He was arrested at 10.10pm in the same area and a lighter, believed to be used to start the fire, was also seized from the suspect," he said.

Mohd Azam said preliminary checks showed he acted out of anger because the wife did not take him along for a wedding she attended in Kajang.

"The suspect who has never had any criminal records in the past also tested negative for drugs. We have obtained a four day remand order until Jan 22 for the suspect," he said.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire with the intent to cause damage.

"The penalty under Section 435 is imprisonment for up to fourteen years and may also include a fine. We warn and advise the public to refrain from engaging in any acts of mischief or criminal activities," he said.
