Police arrest 24 foreign GROs in anti-vice raid

KUALA LUMPUR: The police raided four entertainment centres in the city suspected of operating without licenses and employing foreign women as guest relation officers (GRO).

The 11.30pm raid, dubbed as Op Noda, was conducted by the Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division (D7) of the Kuala Lumpur Police's Criminal Investigation Department.

The four entertainment centres raided during the operation included two premises on Jalan Kampung Pandan, and one each on Jalan Sultan Ismail and Taman Miharja, Cheras.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said in the raid, the police arrested 30 people, including four security guards, and 26 foreign nationals, aged between 20 and 41.

He said the four security guards of the premises were local men, while the 26 foreigners comprised of two men who were workers and 24 women suspected to be employed as GROs.

"The two men were Myanmar nationals. As for the women, 10 were from Indonesia, seven from Vietnam, three each from China and Thailand, and one from Laos.

"Further investigation revealed that two out of the four raided premises did not have valid business licenses, while three of the entertainment premises were found to be hiring foreign nationals as workers and GROs," he told Berita Harian, who participated in the operation last night.

Allaudeen added that the individuals detained were handed over to the Wangsa Maju district police headquarters (IPD), Dang Wangi IPD and Cheras IPD for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Section 39 (b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, Section 4(1) and Regulation 29 of the Entertainment (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) Act 1992.
