Labourer sentenced to 10 years in prison for causing death of friend

KUALA TERENGGANU: A labourer was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment today for causing the death of his friend by negligence last year.

The sentence was meted out on 40-year-old Mohd Alias Mokhtar by Sessions Court judge Mohd Zul Zakiqudin Zulkifli after the former pleaded guilty to the offence, who ruled that the sentence was to begin from the date of arrest on Nov 21, 2023.

Alias was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case, Alias had caused the death of his 45-year-old friend when he used a hammer, helmet and knife to injure him, causing 37 wounds.

He had committed the offence about 8.30pm at a house in Kampung Gelugor Kedai, here, on Nov 19, last year.

The victim was found dead by neighbours the following day. Ten hours later, Alias was arrested by police in Kampung Bukit Payung, Marang.

Prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Nur Nabihah Hanin Ayim while the accused was represented by lawyer Mohd Hayyatuddin Muhamad.
