Civil servant nabbed for RM450 graft

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a civil servant to assist investigation into a RM450 graft case involving welfare aid to a disabled.

Sources said the man, in his 30s, was believed to have asked for bribe money from an individual to help approve monthly welfare aid for the disabled from a government department in January this year.

"Last Monday, the suspect had contacted the individual and asked for the bribe money after the individual managed to obtain the financial aid.

"The suspect was detained in Balik Pulau last night when accepting the bribe money," the source said.

State MACC director Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah, when contacted, confirmed the suspect's arrest.

The case is probed under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

Earlier today, the MACC managed to obtain a six-day remand order against the suspect.

The order was granted by Magistrate Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin following an application made at the magistrate's court here today.
