Selangor police chief: No leads yet in Zayn Rayyan murder case despite RM20,000 reward

PETALING JAYA: No one has yet to come forward with information relating to the murder of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, despite a RM20,000 reward on offer.

The reward from the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Selangor was hoped to help police lead to the arrest of the suspect in the murder of the autistic child.

Selangor police chief, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, said so far, there are no new developments in the case.

"As the director of the Criminal Investigation Department, (Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain) knows, we never give up hope.

"We are still continuing the investigation and there is a team working on this case," he said at a press conference after the Petaling Jaya police chief's Handover Ceremony at its district headquarters here today.

Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Fakhruddin Abdul Hamid handed over the task to Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja'afar @ Ismail while witnessed by Hussein.

On Feb 6, the Selangor MCPF deputy chairman, Datuk Seri A Thaiveegan, said the reward was given through the Selangor police in an effort to help solve the case of the murder of the children involved.

The six-year-old child was reported missing on Dec 5 last year in Damansara Damai here, before being found dead near a creek, about 200m from his home block in Idaman Apartments the next day.

The child is believed to have been killed following an autopsy finding injuries to the neck and body due to self-defence and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The police also asked for help from the International Police (Interpol) and are still waiting for a response related to the database review to help investigate the case of the murder of the autistic child.

In another development, police have opened an investigation paper on a tahfiz school in Selangor over an allegation that the teachers had excessively punished the students for misdemeanour over the past few years.

Hussein said the investigation is being conducted under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for ill-treatment, neglect, abandonment or exposure of children.

"We have opened an investigation paper on the madrasah," he said in a press conference today.

Five days ago, it was reported that teachers in a tahfiz school were found physically assaulting students and forcing them to sleep in the bathroom.

What's even more surprising is that the tahfiz, supposedly supported by a politician from the East Coast, lawyers and medical practitioners, has been found to collect funds from the public under the guise of constructing a mosque which remains unfinished to this day.

Harian Metro has learned that these assaults have been ongoing for over a year, involving senior teachers who were recently arrested by the police.

According to a video shared by sources, the students were seen being kicked, beaten and assaulted by the ustaz while studying, at the end of last year.
