Plantation labourer nabbed over coffee shop murder case in Kulim

KULIM: Police have detained a 31-year-old man to aid in the investigation of a murder involving a lorry driver at a coffee shop in Taman Damai, Padang Serai, on Sunday.

Kulim deputy police chief Safuan Mohd Noor said that the suspect, a plantation worker, was nabbed at 1pm yesterday in the vicinity of Kulim Hospital.

He said that during initial interrogation, the suspect denied any involvement in the attack on the 27-year-old victim.

"The suspect claimed he was injured by someone with a knife while in front of the said eatery and was taken to the hospital by a friend," he said in a statement last night.

Safuan said the attack on the victim was believed to be an act of revenge and that a remand application for the suspect will be filed today.

"The police are still searching for several more suspects to assist in the investigation of the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code," he added, noting that the detained suspect has two previous criminal records related to armed rioting and causing injury.

On Sunday, it was reported that the lorry driver was fatally attacked by two men armed with machetes and sickles.
