RM4.22b water bill not going to make Selangor go bankrupt: MB

GOMBAK: The Selangor state government today insisted that the state will not go bankrupt despite the RM4.22 billion outstanding bill claimed by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash).

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said this in dismissing Selangor Barisan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar's statement yesterday who said that the state government did not have enough resources to settle the claim.

Noh had questioned Azmin's silence on the matter, adding that the state government was at risk of bankruptcy with its reserve at only RM3 billion, compared to the RM4.22 billion Splash's claim filed against Syabas.

Noh also said that Splash had previously disclosed that after taking over 100 per cent of Syabas in 2015, the state government only paid 36 per cent of the total outstanding Splash bills.

Meanwhile, Azmin said BN had failed to understand the economics and financial issues related to the state government.

"The legal suits was filed against Syabas, not the state government. So there’s no connection between consolidated funds and reserve funds...

"Splash filed the legal suits against Syabas and definitely the company will take all possible avenues to defend themselves in court." he told reporters after the Batu Caves Selangorku House Project today.

Recently, Splash, a 40 per cent subsidiary of Gamuda Bhd, served a writ, together with a statement of claim to Syabas to claim all outstanding payments owed by Syabas which amounted to RM4.22 billion.
