Council to hold programme to educate people on Sabah's rights

KOTA KINABALU: A seminar on Sabah’s state rights will be held on May 29 to give better insights to the public.

The one-day programme titled Justice and Rights – The Way Forward, is jointly held for the second time by Sabah Council of Justices of Peace (MAJAPS) and Sabah Law Association, which aims to educate people on legal knowledge.

The council deputy president Datuk Lawrence Thien said Asia Institute Tasmania director Professor Dr James Chin Ung Ho would address the topic entitled “Sabah State Rights viz-a-viz the Federation of Malaysia: A Historical Perspective, the Inter-governmental Committee Report, Malaysia Agreement 1963, and the Federal Constitutions with views on The Way Forward”.

“The state rights within the constitution have become a current public interest topic and thus will attract people to attend the programme.

“The other two papers that will be presented are on the roles and functions of Justices of Peace, and on the compatibility of native court with the jurisdiction of the civil and criminal courts,” he said during a press conference after 13 Justices of Peace was sworn in at a High Court here.

The registration fee for the programme for early birds is RM200 before May 10, after which, the fee will be fixed at RM250.

The closing date for registration is May 24 and there are a total of 400 seats available.

Also present was Sabah Law Association president Brenndon Keith Soh.
