Veteran athletics official Sulaiman Soloman dies at 79

ALOR STAR: Respected senior athletics official Sulaiman Soloman Abdullah, died in his sleep at his home here today. He was 79.

Sulaiman had served the International Association of Athletic Federation, the Malaysian Athletic Union and the Kedah Amateur Athletic Association.

The former teacher, who is survived by a wife and two sons, was laid to rest here today.

Kedah Amateur Athletic Association secretary S. Govindarajoo said Sulaiman, fondly known as Solo, was the man who had introduced a standarised examination in the International Association of Athletic Federation technical committee.

Malaysian Athletic Union president Datuk Karim Ibrahim said Solo's death was a great loss to the country's athletic fraternity.

“He was the first Malaysian to be elected into the IAAF Technical Committee, where he not only formulated a standardised technical officials exam but was also a lecturer, delivering talks in many countries.”
