33 illegal immigrants nabbed in T'ganu ops

KUALA NERUS: A total of 33 illegal immigrants were nabbed in several raids at rental houses in Kampung Bukit Nenasi, Batu Rakit and Felcra Bukit Sudu, here, on Thursday.

The detainees comprise 21 men, six women, four boys and two girls, believed to be from Myanmar and Thailand.

"The Myanmar and Thais nationals were working illegally as rubber tappers and cooks (on plantations)," said State Immigration Department director Wan Suhaini Wan Mohamad.

All 33 were sent to the Ajil Detention Centre in Kuala Berang for further investigation. Some are being probed under Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act 1959 for not possessing valid travel documents. Others are being investigated under Section 15(1) and Section 39(b) of the same Act for overstaying and violating their work permits.

Suhaini said 18 enforcement officers from the Kuala Terengganu head office were involved in the seven-hour Ops Selera and Ops Sapu, which ended at 5am.
