Rise in tithe collection amount shows financial strength of Sarawak's Muslim community

PETRA JAYA: The increase in the amount of tithe collected last year shows that despite the volatile global economy, the financial position of Muslims in Sarawak remains strong.

Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Abang Openg said this was the conclusion which can be derived from the RM72 million in tithe collected by the Sarawak Baitulmal Fund last year.

He also praised State Baitumal Fund Board for its ability to generate RM28 million in income via asset management and trading in the same year.

“The economic strength among the Muslim community is the result of a united and strong ummah embracing the teachings of the Sunnah Wal Jamaah.

“The better financial position has led to an increase in the collection of tithe in Sarawak.

“The increase in tithe collection will allow the board to reach out and help the needy in the state," said Abang Johari in his speech at the handing over of contributions by the Sarawak Islamic Council to mosques and surau in Kuching, here today.

Abang Johari said there were also many mosques and surau being upgraded thanks to the increase in the number of congregations.
