Only 6 non-compliance cases recorded under Ramadan Price Control Scheme

PUTRAJAYA: Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has recorded six non-compliance cases under its current Ramadan Price Control Scheme.

The maximum compound issued since the start of the fasting month was RM900.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said a total of 13,464 spot checks have been conducted nationwide since the beginning of Ramadan and most traders have adhered to the scheme.

"The percentage of traders who did not comply by our price control scheme are small. This shows that most of our traders are abiding by the rules," Hamzah said in a press conference in his office today.

The small offences, according to him, were mainly failure to display the pink tags for gazetted items like grated coconut and green peas.

Failing to display pink price tags during the duration of the scheme constitutes an offence under Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, where an individual can be fined not exceeding RM10,000 upon conviction or compounded up to RM5,000.

The Ministry has also announced 21 items under its Hari Raya Price Control Scheme, which runs from June 17 to 30 this year.

Traders found guilty of selling the essential items above the maximum retail price set by the government can be fined up to a maximum of RM100,000 or three years imprisonment or both.

Hamzah said if the public has information on traders raising prices, or not displaying price tags, they can lodge a report to his Ministry by calling 03-8000 8000 or e-mail e-aduan@kpdnkk.gov.my
