Melaka CM expresses sympathy for flood victims, promises early assistance

MELAKA: State finance officer Roslan Ibrahim has been appointed as the State Disaster Management Committee chairman to oversee the overall flood situation in the state.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron expressed his sympathy for affected flood victims and assured that assistance would be given in due time.

“We have assemblymen going down to the ground to visit flood victims and provide early assistance.

“I have also ordered for flood aids to be coordinated to flood victims this Thursday,” he said at the Hari Raya open house hosted by State Assembly Speaker Datuk Othman Muhamad here today.

Continuous downpour overnight saw the homes of 149 victims from 21 families in the districts of Jasin and Alor Gajah inundated with floodwaters.

In Alor Gajah, three evacuation centres were opened for 142 flood victims from Kampung Bukit Tambun, Kampung Bukit Balai and Kampung Pulau.

In Jasin, seven victims from two families are being accommodated at a temporary relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tehel.

Meanwhile, Othman described his open house as a 'perjumpaan perpaduan' (unity gathering) as his house was turned into a meeting point for Muslims and non-Muslim guests to exchange pleasantries and strengthen their bond.

"Guests came as early as 12pm to celebrate the festivity. We also have MCA leaders, as well as MIC leaders and former MIC leaders present here," he said.

Othman added that the crowd of 7,000 visitors surpassed his initial target of only 5,000 guests.

Also present at the open house were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob, former Melaka Chief Minister Tan Sri Mohd Ali Rustam, and other state executive council members.
