Toddler trapped in car causes panic for father

NILAI: A toddler, who accidentally locked himself in a car, with its engine running, at a petrol station here yesterday caused his father momentary panic.

Nilai Fire and Rescue Operation Officer Mohd Fauzi Shamir said the incident occurred at 9.20pm when the father, Mohd Khairul Anuar, in his 30s, stopped by the petrol station to refuel.

Mohd Khairul had left his two year-old toddler alone in a Proton Gen2 without switching off the ignition, leaving the engine idle.

“As the father went to pay for petrol at the counter, the toddler accidentally pushed down the central locking button,” said Fauzi.

The panic call was received a minute later at 9.21pm and a team was dispatched to the location immediately, he elaborated.

Upon arriving some 10 minutes later, the toddler was found to be crying, sweating and on the brink of suffocation.

“We had to use a rope and other rescue tool to unlock one of the doors,” explained Fauzi, adding that it took the rescue team five minutes to get the toddler out from the car.
