Man suffers severe burns in Skudai flat fire

JOHOR BARU: A 51-year-old man suffered burns to 80 per cent of his body when he was trapped in his family’s flat in Taman Desa Skudai in a fire today.

Mohamad Tan Chai Wah Abdullah, who works as a security guard was rescued by fire fighters in the 12.10pm incident.

Skudai Fire and Rescue station chief Mohd Azrai Yahaya said Tan was found unconscious in the kitchen, and was later sent for treatment.

He said 20 personnel from the Fire and Rescue stations in Skudai, Pekan Nanas and Kulai were deployed to put out the fire on the fourth floor flat, and they managed to control the blaze within 12 minutes.

“The fire razed 60 per cent of the flat. The victim survived the incident and sustained 80 per cent burns. He was rushed to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment.

“The fire spread to two neighbouring houses but the damage to those houses were minimal, between 10 and 20 per cent,” he said, adding investigations were on-going to determine the cause of the fire.
