KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed woman is having trouble settling the debts owed by her ex-boyfriend.
Chong Huey Ching, 28, from Batu Pahat, Johor is shouldering debts totalling RM375,000 borrowed by her ex-boyfriend known as Lee.
Chong said she was shocked when a loan shark called her earlier this month and demanded her to pay the debt and interest amounting to RM15,000.
“I think this is just the tip of the iceberg of the total debts he borrowed. I have yet to know the total amount he borrowed from different money lenders,” Chong told reporters at a press conference at Wisma MCA here.
Her case was brought to MCA Public Services and Complaints Department chief Datuk Seri Michael Chong.
Chong and Lee started their relationship in June 2014. They began a hair salon business at Batu Pahat, Johor in Jan 2015 and opened a second branch at Parit Raja, Johor.
“The business capital for the two hair salons totalling RM225,000, Lee only invested RM20,000 and the balance was paid by money he borrowed from my family members.
“We broke up in Nov last year. Two months later, he started to forge my signature and issued several cheques to pay suppliers, employees and shop rentals. I was notified by the bank about the signature forgery.
“Although the businesses were registered under my name, I have not received a single sen from the profit. I was used by my him (Lee) and he was the sole person who ran the business operation,” she said.
She said the salons were closed in March and July respectively.
“Besides the money he borrowed and owed, there is also outstanding of utility bills around RM5,000 and shops rental about RM30,000.
“Before closing the shops, he had sold hair treatment packages to customers totalling RM100,000. Customers signed up for the packages had lodged police reports and demanded a refund.
“When we broke up, he promised to take full responsibility of the business handling of the two salons. Only in Jan, I deregistered the businesses from Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM). However, he continued to run the business after deregistration,” she said.
(Michael) Chong said that he had received 12 cases similar to this where ex-lovers revenge on their former partners.
