Longhouse fire claims life of 83-year-old grandmother

BINTANGOR: An 83-year-old grandmother was burnt to death when fire razed to the ground a 38-door longhouse in Jalan Tulai here today.

The charred remains of Saripah Serang were found inside the living room of longhouse in the 12pm blaze. It was learnt that the victim was trapped inside the living room as the fire tore through the entire premise.

State Fire and Rescue Department assistant operation director, Tiong Ling Hii, said his men were still investigating the cause of the fire.

“Eleven men from the Bintangor Fire and Rescue Station were deployed to the scene after the station received a distress call on the incident at 12.20pm.

“The fire has spread to the entire longhouse when our men arrived on the scene. The team took about an hour to control the fire from spreading to three other houses nearby,” he said.
