Indonesian Education and Cultural Ministry offers 10 cultural exchange scholarships to Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR: The Indonesian Education and Cultural Ministry are offering 10 one-year cultural exchanged scholarships to Malaysians.

The scholarships are aimed to enable Malaysians to learn and explore Indonesia’s culture and its language.

Education director Tan Sri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof said they welcomed the offer and thus far, two Malaysians have applied for the scholarship.

With eight more spots to be filled, Khair said the focus will be on teachers to enable them to explore the Indonesian culture and language.

He said this after the bilateral meetings between the education ministries of both countries, in conjunction with the Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Council (SEAMEC) conference.

At the meet, Malaysia was represented by Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid while the Indonesia Education Ministry was represented by its Education and Cultural Minister, Prof Dr Muhadjir Effendy.

Meanwhile, Khair also shared that SJKC Pulai has emerged as the second prize winner in the 2016 SEAMEO-Japan Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Award ceremony, yesterday night.

He said that school has been running its ‘Energy Conservation through Sustainable and Low Carbon School Culture Programme’ including carrying out studies and researches to promote energy conservation, for the past 10 years.

The award, which aims to reward the best practices in education development, saw the school taking home a US$1,000 cash prize, a plaque and a certificate.

Education Department of Kulai district chief officer Ishak Mahbob was present to handover the prize to the school principal, Lee Boh Dan.

Lee said the school’s move to conduct the programme took off after a trip to Taiwan where she witnessed how a school there has successfully transformed waste products into cash through the sale of recycled goods.
