(Update) Baby found dead in cradle at home

BAYAN LEPAS: A four-month-old baby was found dead inside a cradle at his house in Teluk Kumbar here early this morning.

The baby, Faris Rayyan Qhumainy Faizul, was found lifeless by his mother, Melati Mohammad @ Ahmad, 32, when she returned home from work about 7.30am.

According to Melati, the baby’s father, Faizul Firdaus, had changed his diapers when the boy woke up at about 4.30am, and put him back to sleep inside the cradle after that.

When Melati arrived home, she found her boy, lying face down, looked pale and lifeless.

Faizul rushed him to the Balik Pulau Hospital but the child was pronounced dead on arrival.

Melati said her son had difficulties sleeping recently, so her husband placed a small pillow beside him to make him feel comfortable.

"Our baby might have been gasping for air before he died. My husband did not notice anything as there was no noise from our boy throughout the night.

"We just have to accept the fate that Faris is no longer with us," said the heartbroken mother when met at the Penang Hospital today, where the child's body was sent for a post-mortem.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent A. Anbalagan confirmed the incident and said that a post-mortem was underway.

"The report will ascertain the cause of death of the child," he said.

Faris's funeral will be held at the Masjid Teluk Kumbar Islam cemetery later today.
