MACC: Not everybody with wealth must be subjected to investigations

PUTRAJAYA: Investigations against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on claims of him possessing RM230 million, will only be carried out, if there was valid basis said the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC).

Its chief commissioner Datuk Zulkifli Ahmad said not everybody with wealth must be subjected to investigations.

"There must be a valid basis to prove that one's wealth was procured through corruption or abuse of power.

"If there is no proper and valid basis, how are we supposed to investigate? he asked.

Zulkifli was met after Gagasan Sejahtera handed over a memorandum to pledge their support against corruption nationwide at its headquarters, here, today.

Last week, Zahid said he was ready to be probed by the MACC of over claims that he had RM230 million in 1996.

He said he was the UMNO Youth leader at that time, with no position in the government and was a successful businessman.

As such, he said there was nothing wrong if he had the money in his account, as the assets he owned was bought legitimately.

Zulkifli said people can be rich, but the source of acquisition is important.

"If the source was through corruption and abuse of power, only then it will be right for MACC to step in and investigate.

"Stating that there is RM230 million in the account is not enough and the person who said it, did not provide any evidence so far," he added.

In a recent report, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Zahid had RM230 million in his account when he declared his assets in 1996.

However, Dr Mahathir admitted that he does not have any proof to back his claim against Zahid.
