MACC probe into illegal bauxite mining in Kuantan will be completed soon

KUANTAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) probe into illegal bauxite mining activities in the Pahang capital is expected to be completed soon.

A source said the graftbuster has completed the procedure related to the seizure of 10 million tonnes of bauxite stockpile around Felda Bukit Goh, Felda Bukit Kuantan and Jabor, which were on both government and private lands.

He said all 12 individuals - 10 state Land and Mines Office (PTG) enforcement officers, a PTG general assistant and a senior Customs Department enforcement officer - who were previously detained to shed light into alleged graft linked to illegal bauxite-mining, have been released.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki confirmed there will be no further arrest and that the commission has seized all the bauxite stockpile here.

On Aug 2, MACC launched a crackdown on illegal bauxite-mining where they picked up 12 people to assist its probe into violation of the moratorium.

On Aug 12, the anti-graft watchdog seized more than 10 million tonnes of bauxite minerals.

On Thursday, the Regent of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah expressed his disappointment over the alleged involvement of civil servants with certain quarters conducting mining activities even during the moratorium, which had been enforced since Jan 15 last year.

He said MACC has concrete evidence to take such action (conduct arrest) and hoped the move will serve as a lesson to those involved in the activity.
