More than 30,000 houses for armed forces' personnel to be built - Hishammuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry plans to complete building 31,000 houses for members of the armed forces from all ranks and ex-servicemen by 2030.

Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said this came under the armed forces’ family housing scheme which was being developed nationwide.

He said so far 9,000 had already been built and 78 sites nationwide including in Sabah and Sarawak had been identified for the development.

"I sincerely hope that this effort will safeguard the welfare of servicemen, ex-servicemen and their families.

"It is not a one-off agenda ... we have conducted lab study on this for the past two years and we will ensure this project is completed by 2030.

"The representatives of each military service have informed us on how many houses they need for our men and hope this will be passed on to future generations," he said at a press conference on the ministry’s housing agenda at Wisma Pewira here today.

Hishammuddin said the minsitry through Armed Forces Fund Board also planned to build more affordable houses for the servicemen and veterans under the Civil Servants 1Malaysia Housing Schemes nationwide.

He said as of July this year, the ministry had identified sites in Selangor, Johor and here for the implementation.

He said more than 5,000 affordable houses were also in the pipeline under the “Satu Anggota Satu Rumah” (One Serviceman One House) programme with several locations earmarked for the development.

He said the ministry and stakeholders were currently finalising details of construction for all housing schemes before the implementation.

He said a more detailed information on all these projects would be announced in early October.
