Terengganu to host recreational cycling event come October

KUALA TERENGGANU: Fresh from its recent Sea Games success, the Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) will host a recreational event to further boost the popularity of the sport.

The 110km ‘TSG Fellowship Ride 2017’ on Oct 28 is expected to draw in thousands of youths and adults as it offers RM120,000 worth of lucky draw prizes.

The top prize is a Perodua Axia, with other attractive prizes that include motorcycles, bicycles, mobile phones and holiday packages.

TSG chief executive officer Farhan Abdul Wahab said that entries at RM100 each will close on Sept 12 and registration is via www.sports360.my

He said the 110km ride would start and finish at Batu Burok.

“The first stage will begin at 7.30am and will pass through the Sultan Mahmud bridge to Kuala Nerus along the coastal road to Merang for a 30-minute pit stop.

“Then it will proceed to Guntong and Sungai Tong for the second pit stop.

“The cyclists will then move to Batu 6, then to Manir and finally back to Batu Burok by lunchtime,” said Farhan at a barbeque dinner at the TSG office in Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin to host five TSG riders who won medals at the just concluded 2017 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games.

Present were TSG chairman Datuk Rozi Mamat, who is also state youth, sports and human resources committee chairman, its executive director Tengku Datuk Farouk Hussin Abdul Jalil, who is also Kuala Nerus district officer, and director Samiun Salleh, who is also Terengganu State Economic Development Corporation general manager.

Farhan said that the curtain raiser on the night before the fellowship ride would include a busking competition, Zumba dancing, fishing competition, children’s drawing and colouring competition, and a cycling fun and obstacle clearance ride – all at Batu Burok.

At the Sea Games, TSG riders Mohd Harrif Salleh won the road criterium gold, Mohd Zamri Salleh the road criterium bronze, Mohd Shahrul Mat Amin the road race silver, Nur Aiman Mohd Zariff the team track time trial gold and individual pursuit track silver.

They will be among 59 of Terengganu’s athletes who won medals at the Sea Games.

Terenganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman has assured the medal winners a windfall of incentives soon.

Terengganu athletes won a total of 26 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals, and were the largest contributor of 74 athletes for the Games.

Apart from the TSG riders, Terengganu’s cyclists include keirin world champion Azizulhasni Awang who won two gold, Fatehah Mustapa with four gold and Irwandie Lakasek with two gold medals.

Other Terengganu Games medallists were archer Khairul Anuar with one gold and two silver and Nur Aliya Ghapar with one gold, one silver and one bronze; sepaktakraw’s Mohd Safarudin Abu Bakar with one gold and one bronze, and Mohd Hanafiah Dolah with one gold and one bronze; and gymnast Zul Bahrin Mat Asri with two silver.
