Missing Balik Pulau fisherman found dead at sea

BALIK PULAU: A fisherman reported missing while at sea yesterday was found floating in waters off Pasir Belanda, Teluk Kumbar here this morning.

The remains of Mohd Fikri Jamil, 27, were discovered at about 10.45am, roughly three kilometres from shore.

He was reported missing at about 2pm yesterday when a fellow fisherman spotted his unmanned boat at sea, with the engine still running.

The fisherman, who suspected something amiss, immediately informed the victim's father, who lodged a police report.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a search was planned for 3pm yesterday, but was called off due to bad weather.

"We re-activated the search this morning, and it was then that we found the victim, floating in the water.

"The remains were brought to the Tanjung Asam jetty, before they were handed over to police," he added.

Earlier, Balik Pulau member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya visited the search and rescue (SAR) operations centre and offered words of encouragement to Fikri’s family members and friends.
