Flash floods inundate villages in Nibong Tebal

NIBONG TEBAL: Flash flood, following continuous heavy rain, has trapped a family of four, including two children, in their house at Kampung Sungai Baung this evening.

The main road, connecting the village to Relau, Kedah was also cut off after the road was inundated by four-feet of floodwaters.

Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received a distress call at about 5.20pm and arrived at the scene about 20 minutes later.

"By the time we arrived, water from the nearby river had inundated the village.

"We managed to bring the family of four, including two children, to safety," he said.

The spokesman said the other 20 families had left their homes when the water started rising earlier.

"We are monitoring the situation but the water is slowly subsiding," he added.

Meanwhile, the spokesman also said that in nearby Kampung Lima, the flooding has submerged two houses and the water level was rising.

To date, no evacuation centre has been opened as yet.

Checks by the New Straits Times showed heavy rain was also recorded in Persiaran Gurney right up to Tanjung Bunga.
