Rapid Penang struggles to resume services; HQ flooded, temporarily relocated

GEORGE TOWN: Rapid Penang commuters have been advised to regularly check the service status of bus services, which were disrupted today following severe flooding in various areas across the island.

According to a statement released by Rapid Bus – operator of Rapid Penang – commuters are advised to check the latest updates on bus services via the Rapid Penang Facebook page @rapidpgfans and Twitter @rapidpg in planning their travel during the current rainy season.

“Due to the heavy downpour in Penang (today), certain areas have been flooded. The floods have caused major service disruption to Rapid Penang bus services.

"Flash floods have also hit the Rapid Penang headquarters at Lorong Kulit, forcing electrical supply to be shut down.

“Rapid Penang has set up a temporary centre at the Weld Quay Bus Depot to manage its operations and ensure the best services possible for commuters. We are working closely with all the relevant authorities in managing the situation, especially in providing the latest updates on (our) services,” it added.

Services are slowly returning to normal after the temporary suspension this morning.

As of 4pm, all bus routes are operating – except for Route 501 between Balik Pulau and Teluk Bahang, and Route 502 between Balik Pulau and Weld Quay.
